Efficient Ceiling Based Insulation On A Budget...
Mineral wool insulation is designed for insulating cold pitched roofs at ceiling level. It is non-combustible and is the ideal loft insulation solution for horizontal loft application. The mineral wool insulation is an all-round high specification option for thermal and acoustic performance in a cold roof system, insulation is required for thermal performance to prevent thermal bridging and heat loss through the loft space.
Current Building Regulation - 270mm Mineral Wool
Mineral wool insulation has a base layer of 100mm that sits in between the joists. Then an additional roll of 170mm on top, cross-laid to achieve the 270mm overall minimum thickness. Always allowing for ventilated eaves to allow for moisture to escape.
Affordability
Mineral wool is a great cost effective option to get solid results without the cost of more premium insulation options. Its very quick to install which keeps installation costs low - Mineral wool is a great all rounded budget way to insulate your loft/void space.
Noise Barrier
Mineral wool works well as a noise barrier especially in built up areas or terrace/semi detached properties. Compared to more premium options that go on the pitch of the roof, keeping your thermal barrier at ceiling level limits the about of noise coming through from other properties/main roads.
Fibreglass to Mineral Wool (Safer, not as harmful)
The UK's most common & best known type of insulation historically would be "Fibreglass" - Mineral wool is essentially a direct upgrade/top up of fibreglass but not as harmful. Fibreglass is extremly itchy and can cause irritation to your breathing, mineral wool is an improved, safer version.
Step 1 (Survey Assessment)
We survey your property, and give recommendations on the most suitable insulation. All options are non-obligatory but if Mineral Wool is the best option for you & you decide to go ahead, the surveyor will calculate your measurements/pricing & arrange appropriate install dates.
Step 2 (Pre-Install Preparation)
Our highly trained installers will arrive at your property & carry out a pre-install inspection to ensure everything is safe and fit for install. All protective sheeting/equipment will then be setup in preparation.
Step 3 (Install)
The installers will then commence work, removing old damaged insulation when necessary, rolling out new Mineral Wool to the designated areas in line with the 270mm minimum specifications.
Step 4 (Post-Install Evolution & Clean Up)
On completion of the job, the lead installer will show you before & after photos, explain what has been done & offer to show you the work and run through any questions you may have. Once you are satisfied that everything has been done to the right standard there will be some post-install paperwork to complete.

The R-value's of Mineral Wool insulation in the loft space. (Cold roof system)
100mm - 2.25 (R-Value)
150mm - 3.40 (R-Value)
170mm - 3.85 (R-Value)
200mm - 4.40 (R-Value)
270mm - 6.09 (R-Value)
Reaction to fire classification - Euroclass A1 or A2-s1,d0
Its very difficult to identify how long an install will take without seeing the project. Once the surveyor has been out to see you to access the property/task at hand, we can then give a much more accurate timeframe to complete your project.
Yes, its not a straight forward process though unlike with other premium insulation options, as when mineral wool insulation is compressed it doesn't work effectively. Loft stilt legs which attach to the joists would need to be installed first, so the new suspended boarding sits 270mm+ above the ceiling level to allow for adequate room for the mineral wool to be unaffected.
Mostly our installers work in a minimum of a 2 man team.
In most cases, you can add new insulation on top of old, even if it's mineral wool on top of fibreglass. This can be a cost-effective way to improve your home's insulation and reduce heat loss. However, if the old insulation is very damaged - we would advise its removed to keep your loft clean & tidy and prevent long term issues such as damp, nesting rodents etc.
